5 important steps to marketing on Instagram

Everybody’s obsessed with Instagram. For business owners and entrepreneurs Instagram can be an invaluable tool.

Instagram holds over 1 billion active monthly active users. 80% of accounts on Instagram follow a business account, hence why the channel has become a profitable tool for marketing businesses and can be especially useful in establishing new brands online.

From tiny stores to large corporations, every business owner can utilize Instagram in promoting their goods or services with high returns.

New qualities such as tagging prices of products, Hashtag + profile links in your bio, IGTV, the carousel feature for photos, stories that allow shopping links to be placed throughout the story, and the new @shop profile created by Instagram to highlight brands over the world. For online brands it is now easier than ever before to convert customers into life-long clients thanks to the ease and accessibility of Instagram.

However, you need a strategic approach to construct returns using Instagram.

Here are a few tips that will help bloggers, entrepreneurs a ecommerce platforms alike make the most of their marketing through Instagram.

1. Create great photo content:

Invest in good content. Organize a photo shoot for every few months that gives your business on brand content that will fit in with your feed. Use quotes or influencers photos as well to help your feed stay active constantly but always look on brand.

You can use stock images from sites like Unsplash or Pexels to use in thickening your feed and breaking up photos of your products. You can also use quotes you’ve found and create backgrounds that fit with your theme easily with apps like Canva.

2. Get Creative with your content.

Content is the driving force behind Instagram. Great content is the difference between popular accounts that create capital and accounts that don’t. This content will set you apart from your competitors so it’s important that sufficient planning is completed when you’re deciding what photos, videos, stories and captions to use.

There needs to be a bit of creativity and humor behind your content where possible. Followers want to see content they can relate to and will want to share with others. In other words, great content will create electronic word of mouth – which is exactly what you need!

An example of a brand that has a great tone of voice that flows through their content on all social accounts is @frank_bod. They use the voice of ‘Frank’ to narrate their Instagram captions which is continued on their website and newsletter.

The best part is, being funny, users often feel like sharing the content with their friends and peers. This simple strategy generates authentic and free publicity for the brand across multiple social media channels.

Remember, the more creative your content is, the more likely are your customers to engage with your brand on Instagram.

3. Using Instagram stories.

When the majority of people think of the Instagram platform they think of publishing photos. However, a major part of Instagram now is posting videos to Instagram stories.

Instagram offers numerous features and tools that can help you market your brand proficiently including Instagram stories and highlights.

Instagram Stories are a great way to promote your brand as it allows for more insight to be given on your business and can make your business more relatable to customers.

You are able to upload photos of videos (boomerangs are included in this too!) You can also take diverse kinds of videos such as rewind, superzoom, the new handsfree feature and many more. All of these diverse features allow you to create creative content for your followers.

Stories are an amazing way to engage your audience through photos and videos you may not want permanently on your feed but still want people to see. As their lifespan is only 24 hours.

So, stories are a great way to advertise an upcoming event, or a limited time offer and build a sense of urgency.

Find the time periods that your followers are most active and post your stories then!

Brands like @frankgreen_official use Instagram stories every day to ask their followers Q & A’s on how to enhance their products or to give demonstrations on how to clean their products.

4. Inspire and utilize User-Generated Content.

User-generated content (UGC) creates legitimacy to your content. It will also help in growing sales and boosting your Instagram marketing in general as it makes your brand feel more accessible and welcoming to new customers. It makes you customers feel like they’re being heard and will encourage growth for your brand.

Around 85% of consumers find graphic UGC more influential than brand content. 48% of consumers also say that UGC is a great way to find new products for first time users.

To help create UGC you can run online contests or ask users to share product reviews. You can also create a hashtag that is specific to your brand that consumers can use so that you can easily find and sort through user generated content. For example, @frank_bod have the unique hashtag #thefrankeffect. Using UGC from customers that have a large number of followers to influence other consumers can also work well.

5. Find great Hashtags

Without the right hashtags, it is very hard to stimulate growth on your Instagram. Your target audience will be looking up keywords that they will find through your hashtags to find what they are looking for.

For example, a plant lover will probably start looking through content with the following hashtags.

  • #plantlife
  • #plantmomlife
  • #plantphotos
  • #plantsomething
  • #plantlove
  • #plantlovergirl
  • #plantlovers
  • #plantphotooftheday
  • #plantaddict

You can use up to 30 hashtags in each content post. However, you need to know how to find relevant hashtags in order to target your target audience. You can use hashtags that are relevant to your location if you are targeting a local audience. You want to use hashtags that are directly relevant to your brand as this will really engage your audience.

You can also look at competitors who are doing well and see what hashtags they are using and you can use some similar ones for your business. Also look at what hashtags industry influencers and what hashtags your followers are using.

Create a hashtag with your business name in it as this will allow for more UGC to be created and will give followers a direct hashtag to use to see other happy consumers. However, make sure your hashtag is attention capturing and easy to remember.

You can use the Instagram search engine to find relevant hashtags. However, you can also use online tools like Hashtagify and All Hashtag to find the relevant hashtags.

Stay on top of relevant hashtags by checking what hashtags are trending often.

Final words.

Instagram is an aesthetically pleasing, creative platform that allows for any brand to be seen if the right marketing techniques are used.

Creating a lasting connection and impression on customers and making them returning customers is much easier through Instagram as it allows for your brand to seem legitimate and relatable by using UGC, stories and other great tools.

Hopefully these tips will help you in creating your businesses Instagram account or by enhancing your Instagram marketing skills.
